The History of Southern Pecan Pie

Interestingly, pecans are native to North America. They grew along the areas irrigated by the Mississipi River, reaching into the eastern parts of Alabama. Post-Civil War, various commercial developers transported pecans to grow in Georgia.

As pecans became more and more popularized in the South, it began to be integrated into various baked dishes. In fact, the earliest printed pecan recipes emerged in Texas cookbooks dating back to the 1870s and 1880s.

While Southern Pecan Pie is largely a dessert of, well, the South, there are also regional variations of the pie. Some variations add ingredients such as bourbon, whiskey, chocolate, and shredded coconut.

Over the years, recipes for Southern Pecan Pies have evolved to contain various types of ingredients. Karo syrup in particular, once it became popular in America, was one game-changer for Southern Pecan Pies. Today, you will find that majority of Southern Pecan Pie recipes often have Karo syrup as one of its ingredients.
